Black Eyed Susans
On January 31, 2011 the State closed Burr Oak Lodge because the management company Xanterra Parks and Resorts didn't renew their contract. In the Fall of 2011, Burr Oak Alive! began as a group of local citizens and officials whose purpose was to encourage the State to find another lodge management company. In August of 2012 the Department of Natural Resources announced the hiring of a new Management Company, U.S. Hotel & Resort Management and the State Controlling Board eventually released $2 million dollars for renovations to the Lodge. After renovations, U.S. Hotels has continued to operate a successful Lodge which helps bring tourists and local residents to enjoy the many benefits of Burr Oak State Park: boating, kayaking, fishing, swimming, camping, hiking, etc.
Burr Oak Alive! continues as an active local friends group in support of Burr Oak State Park and its Lodge. We are officially recognized by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources as a "Friends of the State Parks" group. Burr Oak Alive! incorporated as an Ohio non-profit in June of 2014 and has continued to host fundraising events and support other events at the Lodge and throughout the State Park to encourage local and tourist usage. In 2018 we became a 501(C)(3) organization.
In addition to our membership meetings with officials of the Park and Lodge, our group supports Park Naturalist Julie Gee with many of her monthly events as well as use our resources to donate and plant native trees and flowers around the Nature Center.
Our annual fundraising events include a Winter Mixer (January), The Shamrock Express (March), July "Floatilla" (decorated boats) and a Fall Mixer (October). We also provide volunteers to help the Park with Arbor Day Activities (April), Family Fun Day (July), Halloween Spooktacular (October), the Bobcat Marathon (November) and other activities for adults and children in the Park.

We meet the last Thursday of the the month, January through October, Burr Oak Lodge at 6:30 PM.
Our meeting schedule for 2020 is:
January 30, February 27, March 26, April 30, May 28, June 25, July 30, August 27, September 24, October 29.
The Lake-to-Lodge Trail (in green) would be designed and constructed to be accessible for all visitors to use between the Lake docks and the Lodge. In cooperation with funding from the Department of Natural Resources, Burr Oak Alive! will be seeking other public funding and conduct a fundraising campaign to solicit support from private foundations, businesses and individual donors. Check back for updates as we move forward!
Currently the path from the boat docks up to the Lodge is very steep, we call it "Heart Attack Hill". You have to be in pretty good shape to make the trek up the hill and it's pretty rough going down the hill too!
